Probably you know down the 'pictures'; of yesteryear. Neatly side by side. Hands together. No smile in sight. Those were the group from then. Photography is also to 'fashion' subject. Today it is a bit looser.
If you want to create a group, (egg a wedding) make sure at least for a good light. When the sun shines brightly, a shade under tall trees for example, is recommended.
You can just drop / height can find out where there are in the photo. Think for instance of a chair, 2 small chairs for kids, and a tree stump in the woods. There may be people sitting, standing, squatting, etc. This gives you dynamic in your photo.
And also it's nice when people at ease. A joke, a conversation can quickly break the ice. So you get to become the most relaxed pictures. Make quiet during shots a comment: 'there watching a few people very angry, that's not nice in the pictures then the group egg self laughing. And just when comments by clicking.
It may be important to know where the photo will be used for. Is it really the whole group and have legs, etc. There are also, or is it just a spontaneous' heads pictures. At last you can focus more on the faces.
Imagine grandparents were married many years and the whole group goes on the picture. You can grandparents or put on the side, or the group for grandparents building. So you start with them and then actually build the group together.
An important rule here is "long people in the back, shorter people forward."
Personally, I always make a large number of photographs of groups. You will see that 'eyes' is a common phenomenon. And if you have some more pictures, you increase the chance that everyone has fun on it! Especially with small children and babies, it is difficult to take a picture at one time to get right.
